New Set Material

SHED is always working on new material for their set list.  The goal is to have new material added in for every show.  Some of these songs are drawn from the existing catalogue of SHED material that the band has written over the past twenty years.  Of these songs some are reintroduced to the set-list exactly as they were originally written and others are reworked to reflect the band's new feel of the song in order to deliver a more impactful performance in a live setting.

The brand new material which is currently being written and arranged is an eclectic, intense, and mold-breaking process.  There seems to be no shortage of ideas and concepts being churned out and kicked around by the band.  Even just a short simple off-the-wall riff has the potential to inspire several other riffs, rhythms, and ideas.

At rehearsal on Wednesday evening Bobby Ingals threw out a riff and the rest of the band jumped on it.  It must have been his new guitar that he scored in a resale shop that inspired the riff.  In a matter of minutes the band had the workings of an intense new song.  With the State Street Pub show just over a week away the band is going to stay focused on making sure the set is dialed in but it just goes to show that inspiration and creativity can strike at any time.  Fortunately for SHED Kelley was able to record the session on the Zoom LiveTrak L-12 digital mixer so that the band can pick up where they left off after the State Street Pub show.

Stay tuned for further updates and a sample of the song sometime in January.  Remember to get your crew together and head out to the State Street Pub on Saturday, December 29th to rock out with SHED and special guests Old Revel Minds and Out of the Tempest.  The doors open at 6 pm and there is a $5 cover charge.  The beer selection is great and the menu is good too.  Out of the Tempest takes the stage at 9:30 so make sure you give yourself time to hang out with the bands and enjoy a few drinks before the show starts.

Preparing for the State Street Pub Show

Now that the band is officially inside the two week window for the State Street Pub show SHED is in full show mode.  Rehearsing, writing, and learning new material have been replaced by giving undivided attention to the set list for the show. In the rehearsals leading up to a show the band fine tunes every aspect of the set in order to deliver the best performance possible.

Normally rehearsals consist of a full or partial run through of the existing set followed by work on songs that will be added into future sets.  Some of these songs are drawn from SHED's nearly twenty year catalogue of existing material and some of it is entirely brand new.  When in show mode the band focuses exclusively on the material that has been selected for the show.  Time is spent putting the songs in order and running through them just as if the band were playing live on stage in front of an audience.

The State Street Pub is located at 43 North State Avenue DIRECTIONS HERE.  Doors open at 6 pm and live music starts at 9:30 pm.  There is a $5 cover at the door.  The State Street Pub has plenty of parking both in the parking lot directly north of the building as well as ample on street parking.  You will enjoy a good selection of beers, a dining menu including burgers, fries, and sandwiches, as well as an outdoor area for patrons.

Out of the Tempest hits the stage at 9:30 pm. Check them out on their Face Book page and be sure to get to the State Street Pub early enough to grab a bite to eat and a few drinks before they rip into a killer set.

SHED takes the stage at 10:15 pm to perform existing material with some new tunes thrown in for flavor.  Be sure to take pictures and send them in to be used in the follow-up Gig Report after the show.  SHED encourages everyone to stick around after their set to hang out and have a few drinks while waiting for Old Revel Minds to get set up.

Old Revel Minds will blast off at 11:00 pm with a high-energy set guaranteed to scorch your eyeballs.  While they may be the last band of the night they are absolutely worth sticking around to hear.  If you like metal this is the band for you.

Check out the show details here and be sure to put it on your calendars.  Let your friends know and come prepared for an evening of hard rock with three amazing bands.

Pedal Board - David Jones

David Jones runs a fairly straightforward pedal board for his bass rig.  His signal chain is as follows:

ESP-LTD B-5E bass

Line 6 Relay G30 Digital Wireless

Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner

MXR M87 Bass Compressor

Mesa/Boogie Subway DI bass preamp pedal

Dry preamp signal to a Way Huge Pork & Pickle
Wet preamp signal to a Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus

Wet signal (Boss CEB-3 Bass Stereo Chorus) and dry signal (Way Huge Pork & Pickle) are recombined and balanced using a Radial Mix-Blender Dual Instrument Buffer, Mixer, and FX Loop Interface.

The heart of his rig is his Mesa/Boogie Subway DI bass preamp pedal.  With the Mesa/Boogie he is able dial in a wide range of tones for SHED's needs.  With pre and post outputs David has several options for his signal chain and utilizes both the wet and dry options both separately as well as parallel (but not in series) which helps him to keep his sound as clean as possible.

For the most part David uses effects rather sparingly.  His approach is that effects should provide complimentary interest to the pre-existing backbone of fundamental tone which is provided by the Mesa/Boogie Subway Bass DI.  Clearly though, the astute observer will note, most of David's drive comes from the 1968 Dodge Dart mounted on the pedal board.

The Weekend Update

The weekend is already here and this post should have gone up last night but the band just came up with this idea late last night so it is going up this morning.

For more years than we can count the music scene in Indy has languished.  While there are many theories and opinions as to why and how this happened we have seen few solutions and even fewer attempts to implement a course of action to correct this problem.  While we may not be able to fix it by ourselves we decided, instead of sitting around complaining about it, that we would at least try to make a difference in our corner of the local scene.  Hopefully other bands will do the same and with a concerted effort just maybe we can succeed.  A rising tide lifts all boats and by joining together and working together we can accomplish great things.

We are adding a new page here for fans, bands, venues, and the local scene entitled Gig Report.  Look to see our gig reports of local shows we attend as well as gig reports from readers like yourself.

Got a band you think we should go check out - send us an email and let us know!

Recording Bass Lines

Next week David Jones is heading into the SHED studios to record bass lines for the upcoming album.  The recording desk will be mastered by none other than SHED's very own Kelley Bridgewater.

There has been a lot of discussion on different methods and approaches for recording the bass lines.  Of course a DI will be used but because David has several very interesting options on his pedal board they are looking into using several of them all at once including:

  • A raw bass signal
  • A post preamp signal
  • A wet (affects) signal
  • A mic'ed cabinet in an isolation cabinet

The best of each will be used for each track and in some cases a combination of the signals will be used.  The band is eager to explore recording options to see what turns out best.

David will be laying down lines for:

  • Empty Handed
  • Get it Right
  • The Face You Wear
  • Flush It
  • What Keeps You up at Night

Make sure you check in here often for progress updates on recording and don't forget to sign up for email updates on SHED's latest shows.  On that note SHED has a big show announcement coming up and as soon as the details are finalized you will know about it.

What is SHED working on now?

So, besides rehearsing and getting ready for the next show, what is SHED doing now?  Actually, there is quite a bit going on behind the scenes and we will bring you up to date on all of that.

SHED recently acquired a new bassist, David Jones, and played their first show with him after only two rehearsals.  There was a two week mad dash to get him up to speed on the set list for the show at Hi-Fi Indy on November 21st 2018.  Bobby Ingals worked with David throughout that process to make sure he understood the material and to get things tight.

SHED is finishing up a very special EP of material spanning from 1999 to the present for their fans.  All of the material has been re-recorded to provide the most up-to-date representation of the band's sound.  The band had actually started recording this EP prior to bringing their new bassist on board with Bobby playing all of the bass lines on the EP.  With the addition of David the band decided to have him go in and re-record all of the bass lines to give a full band effort on the album.  With recording and mixing and album artwork the anticipated release date of the compilation EP is slated for sometime in January.

In addition to the EP above SHED is also writing and rehearsing new material for an album due out in the Spring.  The writing process has taken on a whole new dimension as the band gels and discovers their new writing environment and inspiration.  The album of new material will take SHED's fans to a new level.

SHED is actively booking local shows while rehearsing, writing, and recording for the two above EP's.  Look to see SHED with several of the area's top acts at a venue near you.  To see when and where SHED is performing next take a look at our list of shows HERE.  While you are there be sure to sign up at the top of the Shows page for email notifications of newly booked SHED shows and be the first to know.

See you at a show soon!
